Twenty-one distinguished Miller School faculty members and clinicians were recognized for their outstanding contributions to academic medicine.
This year’s Dean’s Faculty Awards honored 21 distinguished faculty members and clinicians from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and UHealth – University of Miami Health System for their outstanding contributions to academic medicine.
Now in its fourth year, the ceremony honored its largest group of recipients to date. Selected from a competitive pool of submissions, faculty members from diverse disciplines and roles across the medical campus were celebrated for their dedication and success in advancing the mission of the organization.
“Tonight’s honorees epitomize the hard work, dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence that define the Miller School and UHealth,” said Henri R. Ford, M.D., M.H.A., dean and chief academic officer of the Miller School. “On this special occasion, we pay tribute to their passion, resilience and unwavering commitment to transform lives and serve our global community. Their contributions are emblematic of what a premier academic health system and research-focused medical school should be.”
Faculty Citizenship Award
Awarded to a faculty member who has shown outstanding citizenship by active participation in the mission of the organization through service and consistent support of institutional priorities.
• Elizabeth Greig, M.D. ’20, assistant professor of medicine and co-director of the Global Institute for Community Health and Development
Community Engagement Award
Awarded to a faculty member who has demonstrated a commitment to address and advance health equity in local communities.
Recipient: Ruby Natale, Ph.D., Psy.D., professor of clinical pediatrics, lead of the Community Wellness Interprofessional Collaborative
Inclusive Excellence Award
Awarded to two faculty members this year who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to expanding inclusive excellence in the medical community.
• Jason Jent, Ph.D., associate professor of clinical pediatrics and director of innovation and community engagement at the Mailman Center for Child Development
• Basil Williams, M.D., associate professor of clinical ophthalmology and vice chair of diversity, equity and inclusion at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute
Senior Faculty Educator of the Year Award
Awarded to a faculty member with high impact in the domains of educational excellence, including teaching, learner assessment, curricular development, advising, mentoring, leadership, administration and a scholarly approach to education.
Recipient: Steven Gedde, M.D., professor of ophthalmology, John G. Clarkson Chair in Ophthalmology and vice chair of education at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute
Faculty Leadership Award
Awarded to a faculty member who has demonstrated consistent leadership and collaborative skills in furthering institutional priorities.
Recipient: Eduardo Alfonso, M.D., director of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and the Kathleen and Stanley J. Glaser Endowed Professor in Ophthalmology
Excellence in Clinical Service Award (Non-procedural Specialty)
Awarded to a faculty member who demonstrated exceptional clinical skills, including effective communication, professionalism and humanism.
Recipient: Izidore Lossos, M.D., professor of medicine, chief of the Lymphoma Section in the Division of Hematology, endowed director of the Lymphoma Program and head of the Lymphoma Site Disease Group at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center
Excellence in Clinical Service Award (Procedural Specialty)
Awarded to a faculty member for outstanding clinical performance, excelling in their specialty in both diagnostic and procedural areas.
Recipient: David Tse, M.D., professor of ophthalmology and the Dr. Nasser Ibrahim Al-Rashid Chair in Ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute
Excellence in Faculty Mentorship Award
Awarded to a faculty member who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to mentoring colleagues, including advising, coaching, feedback, guidance and career planning.
Recipient: Naresh Punjabi, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine
Senior Research Excellence Award
Awarded to a faculty member for their dedication to advancing and contributing to research through consistent, high-quality and high-impact investigation.
Recipient: Philip Harvey, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, chief of the Division of Psychology and department vice chair for research
Faculty Awards for Service Excellence
Awarded to 11 faculty members this year who have gone above and beyond to provide unparalleled care to patients, demonstrating remarkable expertise and compassion.
• James Hoffman, M.D., associate professor of medicine in the Division of Myeloma
• C. Ola Landgren, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine, director of the Sylvester Myeloma Institute and the Paul J. DiMare Endowed Chair in Immunotherapy
• Sudha Lolayekar, M.D., physician in the Department of Medicine, Division of Internal Medicine
• Lawrence Negret, M.D., assistant professor of clinical medicine in the Division of Medical Oncology
• Patrick Owens, M.D., associate professor of clinical orthopedics, department vice chair of academic affairs, chief of the Hand and Wrist Division
• David Rodin, M.D., physician at Desai Sethi Urology Institute
