Alaska Airlineshas elected to launch Atmos Rewards, a new loyalty program that unifies the former Mileage Plan and HawaiianMiles loyalty programs into a single flexible loyalty program. Loyalty program members will now be able to choose how they earn miles, whether it be by distance flown, price paid, or number of flight segments. Customers will be able to redeem miles for flights to more than 1,000 destinations across the combined networks of Alaska, Hawaiian, and their large network of global partners.
Flight redemptions will start at just 4,500 points, with perks beginning for those who manage to accrue 10,000 status points. The airline will also be launching a new Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite card, which will accelerate status-earning capabilities and offer a Global Companion Award to travelers. The airline is also planning on adding Starlink Wi-Fi to its entire fleet starting in 2026, which is free for Atmos members.
Atmos Rewards Is Redefining Loyalty Programs
The Atmos Rewards Program puts customer choices front and center and lets travelers decide how they would like to earn points and status on Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines flights. Later in 2026, one can select which of the three earning methods they would like to have applied to their frequent-flyer account. Those who travel far will want to be distance-based earners, while those who like premium flights will probably want to have price-based accrual applied to their accounts.
This upgrade to the program keeps a key hallmark of the Alaska Mileage Plan, allowing customers to redeem points for one-way flights from just 4,500 points. This ensures that the customer remains at the center of the program’s focus. Andrew Harrison, the Chief Commercial Officer of Alaska Airlines, had the following words to share regarding the program’s launch:
“Atmos Rewards is more than a loyalty program – it’s a reflection of how guests travel today. We listened to what our members value most and built a program that’s grounded in generosity, personalization and practicality. We’re putting our members in the pilot’s seat, giving them control over how they earn and redeem, while honoring the legacy and values of both Alaska and Hawaiian.”
Faster Status And Quicker Upgrades
The Alaska Airlines management team wants to make it easier than ever before for passengers to attain elite status, helping convert occasional travelers into recurrent, loyal customers. A key piece of this will be the introduction of the new Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite Card, which will overnight become the most important piece of Bank of America’s consumer credit card portfolio. Cardholders will earn one status point per $2 spent on the card and will additionally receive a Global Companion Award.
Passengers can unlock key milestones earlier, starting at just 10,000 status points. At the top of the status spectrum, Atmos Titanium will become the first in the US to offer complimentary same-day upgrades to global Business Class (international long-haul flights as well) for both a member and a companion without any points or upgrade certificates.
By next spring, Atmos status holders will receive complimentary upgrades on flights to Hawaii. Members will also be able to opt into specific groups that offer personalized family travel and wellness-oriented experiences. Current status benefits for members of either program will remain unaffected.
What Does Today’s News Mean For Alaska’s Financial Outlook?
Alaska Airlines has long been seen as one of the industry’s most promising players, with most analysts rating the stock as a strong buy. In my eyes, the expansion of the airline’s loyalty program is a necessary move to help expand the carrier’s market share (especially with premium travelers) as it prepares to properly integrate the two carriers post-merger and launch an international network.
The market, however, does not appear to agree. Shares fell around 2% on today’s news that the airline would be launching Atmos Rewards, with investors likely concerned about the risks associated with many of the most novel features of this program. Giving passengers the choice over how they want to earn miles certainly adds some unforeseen complexity to the airline’s profitability equation.

The Atmos Rewards program is undoubtedly innovative, and it certainly has to be, as the airline is looking to enter a long-haul market dominated by legacy carriers for years. Over the next year, attracting and retaining high-spending premium travelers will be critical for the carrier’s post-merger success.
