UNC Health Lenoir recently presented the 2023 President’s Service Excellence Award to one of its own.
The award was presented to Harleigh Blackman, a phlebotomist technician.
Blackman was selected by peers as an employee who exemplifies superior performance, strong leadership, effective communication and service excellence, said Beverly Jenkins, UNC Health Lenoir director of marketing, community relations and medical staff development.
Her colleagues said Blackman has exhibited exceptional phlebotomy skills. She is adaptable, has a strong work ethic and is self-motivated, which makes her an asset to UNC Health Lenoir.
Harleigh has been appointed head trainer for new phlebotomist hires and phlebotomy students, Jenkins said.
Blackman said part of her job is to help people, especially children, who may be scared of having their blood drawn.
She said it felt “kind of surreal” when she was honored with the award, saying it was nice to be recognized for her skills and work.
“If you’re going to do something, do it to the best of your ability,” Blackman said.
Blackman started working at UNC Health Lenoir June 2019 as a dietary technician. In November 2020, she obtained her phlebotomy certification and became a phlebotomist technician.
She is also credited with being reliable, trustworthy and pleasant and often going the extra mile.
“Harleigh is very dedicated to the success of our laboratory,” said Patti Barrow, UNC Health Lenoir director of diagnostic and clinical services. “Harleigh’s skill, adaptability, strong work ethic, and self-motivation make her an asset to UNC Health Lenoir Laboratory and the hospital. Harleigh assists with training of new phlebotomists and phlebotomy students.
“She presents with a professional, yet friendly approachable manner when dealing with patients and staff. She has excellent problem-solving skills and is quick to lend a helping hand to others, no matter what is needed. Harleigh is a pleasure to work with and her positive attitude is contagious amongst the staff.”
The mission of UNC Health Lenoir is to provide exceptional health care for area residents, Jenkins said.
