Alan Andrews, a building service worker at Western Illinois University, has been named the August 2025 Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month.

Andrews is known for his enthusiasm and efficiency, especially when handling multiple service requests. His nominator praised his patience and commitment, according to a community announcement.

Andrews’ work leaves a lasting impression

“His consistent willingness to assist without frustration or hesitation shows a genuine investment in the needs of the University community,” his nominator said in the announcement.

Andrews plays a crucial role in shaping the first impressions of visitors and students. He consistently exceeds expectations during routine tasks, addressing key problem areas and demonstrating a commitment to the university’s well-being beyond his assigned responsibilities.

“Cleanliness is often the first—and sometimes the most lasting—detail people notice when entering a space. Andrews’s meticulous attention to detail in keeping entryways, restrooms and public spaces clean and presentable ensures that prospective students, visiting families and camp attendees view the University in a positive light,” his nominator said in the announcement.

Andrews’ dedication enhances the learning environment

Andrews’ dedication to cleanliness and safety enhances the learning environment, directly supporting students’ success by ensuring spaces are welcoming and distraction-free.

“When Andrews is present, there is a noticeable difference. He assists multiple offices and departments without hesitation, making sure every area is ready for use by staff, students and guests,” his nominator said in the announcement.

As the Civil Service Employee of the Month, Andrews will receive a $100 stipend, a plaque, a reserved parking space and recognition in WIU communications. He will also be eligible for the Civil Service Employee of the Year Award in December.

The Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month Award was established in 2010 through an endowment created by the Goldfarbs. The WIU Foundation provides a $500 stipend for the annual Employee of the Year Award.
